in 2001, elections incorporated more safeguards against voter fraud, opposition candidate (and former leader) mohamed khouna ould haidallah nevertheless arrested prior election day on charges of planning coup, released same day , rearrested after election. attempted military coups , unrest instigated islamist opponents of regime marred years of 21st century, , taya regime s heavy-handed crackdowns criticized human rights groups.


on june 8, 2003, failed coup attempt made against president maaouya ould sid ahmed taya forces unhappy imprisonment of islamic leaders in wake of us-led invasion of iraq , establishment of full diplomatic relations israel. coup suppressed after 1 day of fighting in capital when pro-taya military forces arrived countryside. number of government officials detained after coup including head of supreme court, mahfoud ould lemrabott, , secretary of state women s affairs, mintata mint hedeid. coup leader, saleh ould hanenna, former army colonel sacked opposing taya s pro-israel policies, not captured or killed during coup. on august 3, 2005, mauritanian military, including members of presidential guard, seized control of key points in capital of nouakchott, performing coup against government of president maaouya ould sid ahmed taya out of country attending funeral of saudi king fahd. officers released following statement:


the national armed forces , security forces have unanimously decided put definitive end oppressive activities of defunct authority, our people have suffered during past years. (bbc)


taya never able return country , remains in exile. new junta called military council justice , democracy, , democracy , rule of law. col.. ely ould mohamed vall emerged leader @ stage. dissidents released, , political climate relaxed. new constitution approved in june 2006. elections held in march 2007, sidi ould cheikh abdallahi elected president , vall stood down.


on august 6, 2008, mauritania s presidential spokesman abdoulaye mamadouba said president sidi ould cheikh abdallahi, prime minister yahya ould ahmed el waghef , interior minister arrested renegade senior mauritanian army officers, unknown troops , group of generals , held under house arrest @ presidential palace in nouakchott. in apparently successful , bloodless coup d état, abdallahi daughter, amal mint cheikh abdallahi said: security agents of basep (presidential security battalion) came our home , took away father. coup plotters top fired mauritania s security forces, include general muhammad ould abd al- aziz, general muhammad ould al-ghazwani, general philippe swikri, , brigadier general (aqid) ahmad ould bakri. mauritanian lawmaker, mohammed al mukhtar, announced many of country s people supporting takeover attempt , government authoritarian regime , president had marginalized majority in parliament.
