channel catfish native nearctic, being distributed in lower canada , eastern , northern united states, parts of northern mexico. have been introduced waters of landlocked europe , parts of malaysia , many parts of indonesia. thrive in small , large rivers, reservoirs, natural lakes, , ponds. channel cats cavity nesters, meaning lay eggs in crevices, hollows, or debris, protect them swift currents. in canada, species largely, though not exclusively, limited great lakes watershed lake nipigon southward.
