republican congressman charles djou first elected in special election in may 2010, republicans heralded significant win , dnc chairman tim kaine responded, democrats got 60% of vote in race. in november election, 1 democrat against 1 republican, , feel very, confident winning race. in general election, hawaii state senate president colleen hanabusa, candidate in special election, emerged democratic nominee. though former congressman ed case, other democratic candidate in special election, speculated run again in november, decided against it. in general election, both parties heavily invested in taking seat, , polls indicated race close until election day. on election day, however, hanabusa edged out djou surprising large 6 point margin of victory , sent congress first term.
