a few minutes after earthquake, many residents reported hearing loud clap tsunami approached shoreline. tsunami resulted in @ least 2,200 people being killed, thousands being injured, 9,500 homeless , 500 missing. maximum height of waves estimated @ being 15 m (49 ft) high average height of 10.5 m (34 ft).
the area worst hit 30 km (19 mi) coastal strip running north-west aitape village of sissano. several villages in path of tsunami destroyed , others extensively damaged. tsunami wave uprooted entire buildings , transported foundations 50–60 metres (160–200 ft) original location village of arop situated on narrow spit between coast , sissano lagoon. directly in path of tsunami , worst hit.
