history
2007: formation

in march 2007, versailles formed kamijo (ex-lareine), hizaki (ex-sulfuric acid), , jasmine (ex-jakura). later, teru (ex-aikaryu) , yuki (ex-sugar trip), recommended rock may kan venue in tokyo, joined band. hizaki, jasmine , teru played part of hizaki grace project.

kamijo , hizaki created concept of versailles in autumn of 2006 , spent 6 months gathering members express it. band concept absolute youshikibi (beauty of form) sound , extremes of aestheticism . on march 30, 2007 details of band announced. released promotional material through internet, set english language page on myspace, , had several interviews foreign press. versailles made first appearance showcase on june 23, followed first performance on june 24. on these dates distributed first single , dvd single, revenant choir .

the band signed german clj records label , released ep lyrical sympathy on october 31, both in japan , europe. song love dead orchestra appeared on compilation album released sony bmg in germany on november 9, called tokyo rock city.

2008: noble

in 2008, versailles made first appearances in europe , united states. in march , april, band performed cooperatively matenrou opera across europe. on may 3, performed @ hide memorial summit @ ajinomoto stadium 30,000 people, along many other bands such x japan, luna sea, mucc , marbell. versailles later invited tainted reality perform shows on may 30 @ project a-kon in dallas, texas , on june 3 @ knitting factory in los angeles, california american debut.

on july 9, 2008, versailles digitally released first full album, noble, exclusively on international itunes music stores. followed general japanese cd release , european release on july 16. released in america on year later on october 21, 2009 maru music, added bonus track.

versailles japanese record label announced on august 19, 2008 received notice of musician in united states using name versailles . japanese band compelled create new promotional name in order proceed plans tour in united states again, called upon fans send in ideas. on september 14, 2008 band announced on website new name versailles -philharmonic quintet- , whilst keeping original name in countries other united states. prince first song released under new name , available free digital download. returned anime usa on october 11 in crystal city, virginia , show @ new york city s knitting factory on october 13.

2009: going major , death of jasmine you

kamijo announced @ december 23, 2008 c.c. lemon hall one-man versailles going major in june 2009, both in japan , internationally on warner music japan. major debut single, ascendead master , released on june 24, 2009.

versailles played last nationwide tour independent band through march 26 may 9, entitled fragment collectors. further events such anthology of revolution marked final concerts, finishing 5 consecutive nights @ meguro rock may kan. final independent live took place on june 21, 2009. versailles announced not performing more lives until release next album.

on august 3, announced jasmine temporarily suspend musical activities due unknown circumstances regarding health , recover. had been announced versailles new album in final stages of production , bass tracks being recorded. in hours of august 9, 2009, reported on official site jasmine had died. translated announcement reads follows:

2009.8.9 「versailles」 urgent announcement: though jasmine had taken time off in order rest because of poor physical condition, received report in morning on august 9, died. because of extreme abruptness of news, members , staff dumbfounded , trying hard accept it. family has been notified , updated details , receive permission, further report of fans. moreover, current announcement, in regards activity, please allow postpone it.

2010: jubilee

after canceled performance, versailles performed @ v-rock festival 09 on october 25, 2009. yo of matenrou opera played support bassist. on january 4, 2010, versailles held jasmine -memorial ceremony- @ shibuya o-east, themselves, kaya , matenrou opera performed. major label debut album entitled, jubilee, released on january 20, 2010.

they announced world tour entitled methods of inheritance, started on february 28, 2010 in yokohama. support bassist tour masashi, member of cosmo , közi s live band. japanese leg of tour ended 2 final gigs, 1 in osaka @ midou kaikan on april 18 , 1 in tokyo @ jcb hall on april 30, 2010, these concerts performed live choir.

versailles traveled latin america shows in brazil, chile, argentina, peru , mexico, , europe shows in norway, russia, finland, england, spain, france, netherlands, germany , hungary, before returning japan. finale of tour performed on september 4, 2010, @ c.c. lemon hall, of concert later broadcast on wowow. there announced masashi officially joined band new bassist, jasmine being cited eternal member . announced live versions of 2 indie albums, lyrical sympathy -live- , noble -live-, released on september 1, 2010. songs recorded on december 23, 2008, @ chateau de versailles tour final @ c.c. lemon hall, same concert appears on chateau de versailles dvd.

their next single released in 3 types: 2 different limited editions (type , b) , regular edition. single, entitled destiny -the lovers- , released on october 27, 2010. in late november, panasonic broadcast 15-minute digest of 1 of versailles concerts in 3d @ more 8,000 retail stores nationwide. concert world tour 2010 method of inheritance -jubilee- gig recorded @ jcb hall in tokyo on april 30, 2010. fans caught exclusive 3d screening of concert @ panasonic center in ariake, japan november 8 14.

2011–2012: holy grail, fourth studio album, , end of activities

in january 2011, versailles started starring in own tv mini drama called onegai kanaete versailles (おねがいかなえてヴェルサイユ, lit. fulfill wish versailles ). show starred rina koike , aired on mainichi broadcasting system , tv kanagawa until march. theme song show versailles single philia , released on march 15. furthermore, versailles went on release second major studio album, entitled holy grail, in 3 editions on june 15, 2011. album includes; masquerade , main theme of film vampire stories: brothers, , vampire , main theme film vampire stories: chasers, kamijo produced music for. band started second world tour, titled holy grail, on july 31, 2011 in kyoto. tour took them asia (hong kong, taiwan) in september, europe (russia, england, spain, italy in october, austria, poland, germany, france) in october , latin america (mexico, colombia, venezuela, brazil, uruguay, argentina, chile) in november.

on april 25, group released digital single rhapsody of darkness . released single rose on july 4, in celebration of band s 5th anniversary.

on july 20, versailles announced on official website stopping activities @ end of 2012, stating: being our 5th anniversary -- , without clear direction heading future – have decided in best interest of band , music, our staff , supporters, in order pursue our artistic , personal goals outside current framework, stop our activities end of 2012.

the band released self-titled fourth album on september 26, went on 8 stop japanese tour in november, before giving last performance in tokyo @ nhk hall on december 20. compilation album anthologie released on january 30, 2013 , includes songs when band signed warner music group, 2009 2012. limited edition included additional five-track cd of live recordings. live dvd live best, compiles concert footage same period, released on march 27, 2013.

in january 2013, kamijo announced start solo career. first release, single louis ~enketsu no la vie en rose~ (louis ～艶血のラヴィアンローズ～), released on august 28. on april 1, other versailles members, hizaki, teru, yuki , masashi, announced had formed new band named jupiter. recruited zin vocalist , released debut single, blessing of future , on july 24.

2015–present: reunion

on december 20, 2015, members of versailles shared news of reunion show on official twitter accounts. concert held @ kamijo s world tour 2015 -20th anniversary best- grand finale on december 28, 2015 @ zepp divercity in tokyo.

versailles held concert @ zepp divercity on june 25, 2016 celebrate 9th anniversary. compilation album greatest hits 2007-2016 followed on september 14 , contained 2 new songs. band released new album, titled lineage ~bara no matsuei~, exclusively people bought tickets february 14, 2017 show @ nippon budokan.
