manchester s army consisted of 6,000 infantry , cavalry. garrison of town 2,000 strong. on 3 may parliamentarians managed capture parts of lower town , royalists retreated in upper works surrounded lincoln castle , lincoln cathedral.


on 4 may roundheads unable press attack because rained heavily making mound under castle slippery.


cromwell posted horse cover siege interruption goring. made dispositions that, hearing on 5 may goring had crossed trent, cromwell s troopers assembled , drawn in little on hour news being received. goring, finding outposts on alert, fell again. contemporary royalist report states that night parliamentarians attempted storm lincoln close repulsed 60 killed.
