accommodating epic dispersion – on non-cathartic volume of dispersion (2012)

this art piece displayed in haus der kunst part of der Öffentlichkeit – von den freunden haus der kunst exhibit. yang used colorful venetian blinds hung ceiling in various angles. depending on visitor stood, blinds appeared opaque, semi-opaque, or transparent. title of artwork chosen represent narratives of people of diaspora. example, yang read biographies of figures such korean-japanese essayist, kyungsun suh, , italian-jewish chemist , author, primo levi, , inspired create title of work.


sonic figures (2013)

for series of works, yang influenced oskar schlemmer’s triadic ballet 1922. sonic figures intricate sculptures made using brass-plated bells on steel stands. these works part of exhibition called journal of echomimetic motions displayed in bergen kunsthall, norway. these sculptures embody ideas of mobility , yang “negates static furnishings of exhibition space fixed installations , placed objects” introducing mobile performative sculptures.


the malady of death (ongoing series)

beginning in 2010 during residency @ walker art center in minneapolis in united states, haegue yang has staged series of areadings of french writer marguerite duras 1982 novella malady of death. each reading has been in different languages - local languages, different performer , various visual outcomes. yang s staging of malady of death characterised inconclusive uncertainty , unknown, duras original text. performative outcome of malady of death autonomous aesthetic of yang s other work.


in december 2015, part of mobile m+: live art, yang presented malady of death: Écrire et lire, consisted of staging of malady of death @ hong kong s sunbeam theatre , publication of first chinese translation. held on 2 nights, opening performance saw hong kong writer, hon lai-chu recite duras text, dressed in long white dress upon black stage. staging included burning mosquito coil, moving lights , intermittent bold background projections of image of french actress jeanne balibar.


to date, malady of death has been performed @ walker art center, minneapolis (2010); namsan arts center, seoul (2010); , documenta (13), kassel, (2013); , @ mobile m+: live art, hong kong (2015).

11th century parish church of St Leonard Hythe, Kent
