malate during spanish colonial period open space small fishing village. during spanish period, center of activity malate church, dedicated our lady of remedies.


after united states of america annexed islands in 1898 consequence of spanish–american war, american urban planners envisioned development of malate newest , trendiest exclusive residential area american families. american expatriates , of old spanish mestizo families populated district in modern high rise apartments , bungalows.


despite extensive damage after second world war, many homes , buildings still standing. displaced wealthy families evacuated homes during war returned , re-built private villas , kept whole district exclusively residential until 1970s.


the once exclusive residential areas in western malate began transform commercial area large homes , residential apartments being converted small hotels, specialty restaurants , cafes.


during presidency of ferdinand marcos, visual , performing artists found haven in malate , became bohemian enclave..
