italian navy airborne warning (aew) variant @ luni-sarzana, 2007


in 1997, italian government ordered twenty eh101 helicopters italian navy, options 4 more. these eh101s included ten of anti-surface/submarine (asuw/asw) version, 4 airborne warning (aew), 4 utility, , 4 amphibious support helicopters (ash). of june 2011, aw101 has been chosen meet italian air force (aeronautica militare italiana) requirement 12 helicopters in combat search , rescue role replace several ageing sea king hh-3f; deliveries expected 2014 onwards.


the first italian navy production helicopter (mm81480) flew on 4 october 1999 , officially presented press on 6 december 1999. italy accepted delivery of 21st aw101, configured anti-submarine warfare, on 4 august 2009. italian eh101s have operated variety of ships , have seen service overseas; in 2009 italian navy used aw101 fleet executive transports visiting heads of state , officials during 35th g8 summit.


in 2010, italian navy deployed 3 aw101s afghanistan, flown in both transport , utility roles. in 2011, reported italian contingent in afghanistan, consisting of aw101s, had been providing coverage of wide area of country.
