for several years in late 1980s , 1990s, allegan held city festival called bridgefest in honor of second street bridge. old iron bridge , referred residents, remains common logo , identifying characteristic of historic allegan, michigan. second street bridge served ideal second chance allegan residents gain footing against progressive construction. faced legitimate needs modify or replace aging structures, allegan began taking inventory of well-preserved architectural wealth. in 1953 city of allegan gave unique architectural history seat progress , demolished 65-year-old richardsonian romanesque styled courthouse. previous courthouse, magnificent structure incapable of meeting growing office space needs of city, leveled in favor of modern structure serves allegan county s courthouse today. many of allegan s senior residents can recall old courthouse reverence, , vividly contrast apathy consumed courthouse activism saved old iron (second street) bridge.
