until construction of eider canal in 1784 (a predecessor kiel canal), skagerrak way in , out of baltic sea. reason strait has had heavy international seatraffic centuries. after industrialization, traffic has increased , today skagerrak among busiest straits in world. in 1862, thyborøn channel @ limfjord constructed in denmark, shortcutting passage through skagerrak north sea going directly kattegat. limfjord supports minor transports though.
in both world wars, skagerrak strategically important germany. biggest sea battle of world war i, battle of jutland, known battle of skagerrak, took place here may 31 june 1, 1916. in world war ii, importance of controlling waterway, sea access baltic, motivation german invasion of denmark , norway, , subsequent construction of northern parts of atlantic wall. both of these naval engagements have contributed large number of shipwrecks in skagerrak.
