the canberra hotel built queensland prohibition league (later queensland temperance league). foundation stone laid on saturday 30 july 1927 lord mayor of brisbane william jolly intention build 5-storey building @ cost of £95,000; coins found buried under foundation stone of old temperance hall reburied under canberra s foundation stone along current newspapers , documents relating affairs of queensland prohibition league. architect arnold edwin brooks. building financed private benefactors, particularly william robert black , george marchant, , through low-interest loan independent order of rechabites (a friendly society committed temperance). there ill-feeling black , marchant levied gift tax queensland government in relation donations, in july 1929 building neared completion, act of parliament passed exempt these donations gift tax.
in january 1928, decided add 2 more storeys building (seven in total) , provide hot , cold water each room, increasing cost £120,000.
