tampa 1 of first spring training locations in florida. beginning chicago cubs in 1913, series of major league teams trained @ plant field, multipurpose facility near downtown tampa. plant field home ballpark of minor league tampa smokers, charter member of florida state league. while cincinnati reds still training @ plant field 1950s, facility old (it built in 1898) , had shared among many different teams , events. city leaders decided new baseball-only facility insure tampa continue attractive spring training location.
in 1949, city of tampa bought 720 acres (2.9 km) of open land near west tampa federal government. large, grassy parcel had once been perimeter of drew field, world war ii-era airfield precursor tampa international airport. while tampa s municipal airport grew west, land east purchased idea of building community sports complex.
the construction of al lópez field in 1954 first phase of project. located east of dale mabry highway (highway us-92) , north of tampa bay boulevard, near center of land purchased in 1949. tampa stadium, larger football stadium, constructed in 1967 north, beyond baseball park s left field wall.
