saxon warrior 11 (20 may 2011)


the group departed naval station mayport, florida, joint task force exercise pre-deployment training exercise on 14 february 2011 prior deployment. exercise supported personnel naval striking , support forces nato (strikfornato), representatives canada, denmark, greece, germany, france, italy, netherlands, spain, turkey, united kingdom, , united states. exercise focused on increasing allied interoperability during major combat operations. strikfornato s interest in jtfex training cycle dates 2008, , first time strikfornato had participated component commander in carrier strike group certification.


during 2011 deployment, group s aircraft completed 12,000 sorties, made on 9,000 arrested landings, , logged 31,000 flight hours. included 2,216 combat sorties supporting u.s. forces in iraq , afghanistan. on 20 tons of ordnance delivered in support of coalition ground forces, consisting of laser-guided bombs, gps munitions, , 20-mm ammunition. carrier air wing 8 participated in joint air operations royal jordanian air force , royal saudi air force. after departing djibouti on 1 july 2011, anzio conducted counter-piracy , maritime security operations unit of combined task force 151 before paying goodwill visit victoria, seychelles on 18 august 2011. on 13 august 2011, while combined task force 150 operating in gulf of aden, destroyer mitscher provided assistance sri lankan cargo vessel al habib experiencing engineering problems , running low on water. mitscher s boarding party transported supplies al habib via rigid-hulled inflatable boat (pictured).


also during deployment, group participated in exercise saxon warrior 11, eight-day nato military exercise in western approaches. saxon warrior 11 included naval forces united states, united kingdom, france, germany, sweden, canada, , spain under overall direction of flag officer sea training. part of saxon warrior 11, on 21 may 2011, group s destroyers truxtun , mitscher joined u.s. replenishment tanker leroy grumman , spanish frigate almirante juan de borbón in conducting transit exercise, british destroyer gloucester , frigate westminster acting hostile forces during exercise. also, guided-missile cruiser gettysburg , british destroyer dauntless conducted joint air defense exercises (pictured).


on 8 december 2011, gettysburg returned naval station mayport, florida, , greeted vice president joe biden. on 10 december 2011, george h.w. bush, anzio, mitscher, truxtun returned naval station norfolk, virginia, completing first overseas deployment bush , truxtun.


during 2011, carrier george h.w. bush , carrier air wing 8 logged more 250 days underway, 30,000 flight hours, , 14,000 sorties launched, included 11,000 catapults shot, 15,000 aircraft recoveries, , no operational mishaps. bush received battenberg cup, battle effectiveness award, , flatley award 2011.
