ernest, hereditary prince of saxe-coburg-saalfeld, born @ ehrenburg palace in coburg on 21 june 1818. elder son of ernest iii, duke of saxe-coburg-saalfeld , first wife princess louise of saxe-gotha-altenburg. joined brother, prince albert, later become husband of queen victoria. though duke ernest fathered numerous children in various affairs, 2 boys have no other legitimate siblings. in 1826, father succeeded ernest i, duke of saxe-coburg , gotha through exchange of territories after death of duke s uncle, frederick iv, duke of saxe-gotha-altenburg.
there various accounts of ernest s childhood. when fourteen months old, servant commented ernest runs around weasel. teething , cross little badger impatience , liveliness. not pretty now, except beautiful black eyes . in may 1820, mother described ernest big age, intelligent. big black eyes full of spirit , vivacity . biographer richard hough writes infancy, plainly evident elder son took after father, in character , appearance, while albert resembled mother in respects . ernest , brother lived grandmother dowager duchess of saxe-coburg-saalfeld until death in 1831.
he , albert brought , educated if twins. though albert fourteen months younger, surpassed ernest intellectually. according tutor, went hand-in-hand in things, whether @ work or @ play. engaging in same pursuits, sharing same joys , same sorrows, bound each other no common feelings of mutual love . perhaps sorrows aforementioned related parents marriage. not happy 1 , duke ernest continually unfaithful. in 1824, ernest , louise divorced; subsequently left coburg , disallowed seeing sons again. remarried alexander von hanstein, count of pölzig , beiersdorf, dying in 1831 @ age of thirty. year after death, father married niece duchess marie of württemberg, sister antoinette s daughter. stepmother first cousin. duke , new duchess not close, , produce no children; while boys formed happy relationship stepmother, marie had little no input in stepsons lives. separation , divorce of parents, later death of mother left boys scarred , in close companionship each other.

in 1836, ernest , albert visited matrimonially eligible cousin princess victoria of kent, spending few weeks @ windsor. both boys, , albert considered family potential husband young princess, , both taught speak competent english. father first thought ernest make better husband victoria albert, possibly because sporting interests better received british public. others favored albert on ernest possible husband however. temperamentally, victoria more ernest, both lively , sociable love dancing, gossip, , late nights; conversely, fast pace made albert physically ill. victoria believed ernest had kind, honest, , intelligent expression in countenance , while albert seemed full of goodness , sweetness, , clever , intelligent . no offer of marriage forthcoming either brother however, , returned home.
ernest entered military training later year. in april 1837, ernest , albert , household moved university of bonn. 6 weeks academic term, victoria succeeded queen of united kingdom. rumors of impending marriage between , albert interfered studies, 2 brothers left on 28 august 1837 @ close of term travel around europe. returned bonn in november continue studies. in 1839, brothers traveled england again, where
victoria found cousin albert agreeable , proposed. connection have many implications upon ernest in future; instance, selected godfather albert s second daughter princess alice, , come give away @ wedding, months after albert s death.
