early years

catholicism in marikina began when settlement again ceded augustinians jesuits. on march 10, 1687, governor gabriel cruz elasque ordered transfer of marikina oversight of augustinians , merged ministry of san mateo. instructed don juan pimentel, mayor of tondo, vacate , demolish visita of jesús de la peña marikina river flood site during rainy season. visita not accommodate growing congregation, forcing austin friars transfer operations across marikina higher ground, larger, present structure built. church subsequently made independent parish in 1690.

restoration
the church suffered major damages during tumultuous years of philippine–american war in 1900s , carillion totally destroyed during second world war. 1957, ola church restored , refurbished father silvestre dela cruz of archdiocese of manila various religious , civic organisations.

by virtue of papal bull granted holy see through pope benedict xvi, image canonically crowned on october 23, 2005. archbishop of manila gaudencio cardinal rosales, in name of pope, crowned image after series of research , gathering of testimonies of miracles attributed our lady of abandoned in marikina.

aside marikina, our lady of abandoned patroness of following places in philippines: santa ana, manila, image of virgin enshrined; muntinlupa city; mandaluyong city; valencia, negros oriental; , barangay batiocan in libungan, cotabato.
santa ana district in manila , marikina city have oldest traditions of venerating image.
although church has had our lady of abandoned patroness centuries, feasts in honour not historically attested-to. since 1990, people in metro manila , nearby provinces have made pilgrimages shrine.
marikina honoured image every second sunday of may, altered may 12 until 2010, when local observance changed original date.
