in year 2082, earth has been invited compete in great race of Ōban, intergalactic race winner can given ultimate prize , supposedly granting wish in world - bringing loved one. invitation comes avatar, mysterious entity ends hostilities between earth , sinister race of crogs, in return earth s entry race. eva wei, earth student, escapes boarding school find father, don wei, president of wei racing , best race manager in world. having left daughter in care of boarding school many years without ever visiting, don wei not seem recognize eva daughter. unable tell father is, lands job mechanic in team under name molly , name chosen convenient poster on crate in hangar. when wei racing ordered government represent earth @ Ōban, molly stows away taken far-off planet. during first race, whizzing arrow, earth star-racer ship, crashes due sabotage. star pilot, rick thunderbolt, becomes unable race. after finding gunner, jordan wilde, makes miserable pilot, molly steals ship , enters next race. don wei grudgingly decides 1 can replace rick molly. haunted death of mother - famous star-racer - , harsh reunion father, molly determined win can parents once again.
