kentucky s construction plagued suspensions. keel laid down @ norfolk navy yard, portsmouth, virginia, on 7 march 1942. however, work on ship suspended in june year, , kentucky s bottom structure launched make room lst construction on 10 june. while construction suspended, bureau of ships considered aircraft carrier conversion proposal kentucky , illinois in aftermath of battles of coral sea , midway. proposed, converted kentucky have had 864-foot (263 m) long 108-foot (33 m) wide flight deck, armament identical carriers of essex class: 4 twin 5-inch gun mounts , 4 more 5-inch guns in single mounts, along 6 40 mm quadruple mounts. idea abandoned after bureau of ships decided converted ships carry fewer aircraft essex class, more essex-class carriers built in same amount of time, , conversion project more expensive new essexes. instead, kentucky , illinois completed battleships, construction given low priority. work on ship resumed on 6 december 1944, when keel structure returned slipway. work on battleship proceeded @ slow pace, , completion projected third quarter of 1946. in december 1945 recommended kentucky completed anti-aircraft battleship, , work on ship suspended in august 1946 while considered. construction resumed again on 17 august 1948 without decision having been made on final design. work on kentucky continued until 20 january 1950, when decided halt work on ship. following this, floated out of drydock clear space repairs sister ship missouri, had run aground en route hampton roads.
