on 27 april 1565, spanish explorers led miguel lópez de legazpi arrived in cebu mexico. spaniards renamed city on 1 january 1571, san miguel (saint michael) villa del santissimo nombre de jesús (town of holy name of jesus). island former capital city of spanish east indies before capital city moved manila in 1571.


mandaue known mandani ruled lord aponoan. formally constituted pueblo (people) between 1580 , 1700 , officially known población de mandaue (town of mandaue) in 1899. emerged industrial city of mandaue. mandaue became chartered city on 21 june 1969 through republic act 5519. considered highly urbanized city in year 1991.


talisay former augustinian order hacienda (estate) in 1648 , became municipality in 1849. on 30 december 2000, talisay became component city virtue of republic act 8979.


lapu-lapu city referred mactan. later became town of opon in 1730, 7th town founded augustinian friars in cebu. town of opon became city on 17 june 1961. largest district, lapu-lapu, named after datu lapu-lapu.


metropolitan cebu conceptualized government planners in 1970s , based on experiences of urban planning in metro manila. metro cebu represented province s thriving urban centers physically proximate cebu city, leading commercial , financial hub in visayas , northern mindanao areas population largely dependent on economic opportunities prevailing in area.
