before rise druk desi, peljor served umze or precentor @ state monastery, , skilled @ religious matters unprepared high-ranking governmental office. appointed ruler after unexpected death of predecessor ngawang tshering in 1703, peljor shared power more influential , powerful kuenga gyaltshen, officially acted gyaltsab. peljor s reign short , obscure, historian tenzin chögyal regarded him little more figurehead, , john ardussi called him virtual nonentity . pema tshewang, however, believed umze peljor have been easygoing , peaceful character, ruled righteously , while karma phuntsho considered him politically naive , mild ruler.


during umze peljor s reign power struggle between dzongpens tenpa wangchuk of punakha , druk rabgay of thimphu began, resulting in widespread factional strife. unable deal political imbroglio among government, peljor retired chagri monastery in 1705, ceding remaining power kuenga gyaltshen. nominally, however, remained in office until death in 1707.


after umze peljor s death, druk rabgay became first lay druk desi, ending monk rule on country. murdering rivals , kuenga gyaltshen, ushered chaotic , violent period of bhutanese history.
