at outbreak of first egyptian–ottoman war in 1831, prompted egyptian invasion of palestine, mahmudiye in poor condition, despite being few years old. of hull dry-rotted, though still served ottoman flagship during war. during war, ottoman fleet, along squadron british royal navy blockaded main egyptian naval base @ İskenderun. included long-range bombardment on 18 august 1831. war ended in 1833 following intervention of russia on behalf of ottoman government , pressure britain, france, , austria on egypt withdraw, unresolved tensions between eyalet of egypt , central government resulted in second egyptian–ottoman war of 1839–1841.
after death of sultan mahmud ii on 1 july 1839, internal power struggle resulted in installation of pro-russian husrev pasha under sultan abdulmejid i. on 4 july 1839, commander of ottoman fleet, displeased on russian influence in new government, decided take bulk of ottoman fleet, including mahmudiye, on egyptian side. set sail beşik bay, international fleet composed of british, french, , russian warships present. assistance pro-egyptian french, moved fleet kos, entered negotiations egypt accept fleet @ İskenderun on 14 july. year later, in july 1840, british issued ultimatum egypt return ships , surrender levant ottoman government; egyptians refused, , royal navy bombarded of major ports in region, culminating in bombardment of acre on 1 november. forced egyptians capitulate, , on 27 november mahmudiye , rest of ottoman ships released return constantinople.
