Football League 1920–21 Gillingham F.C. season

gillingham had played in southern football league since formation in 1894, apart when league suspended due first world war, had achieved minimal success , had finished bottom of division 1 in 1919–20 season. club escaped relegation, however, clubs in southern league s top division admitted en masse football league form new third division. in preparation new season club signed number of new players, including wally battiste grimsby town, tommy hall newcastle united, tom thompson sunderland , tom gilbey darlington. 5 players had represented club in non-league football went on make appearances in football league: jock robertson, jack branfield, joseph griffiths, donald mccormick , arthur wood.


the club s first ever football league match against southampton @ priestfield stadium in front of new club record crowd of approximately 12,000 fans, , ended in 1–1 draw, tom gilbey scoring gillingham goal. 4 days later team defeated reading 2–1 away home register first victory, , week later repeated feat @ home, beating berkshire club 1–0 give club record of 2 wins, 1 draw , 1 defeat first 4 matches. followed, however, run of 6 matches without win, including heavy 6–1 defeat against merthyr town.


after beating exeter city in mid-october, gillingham played 12 consecutive matches without win, including emphatic 5–2 defeat @ home northampton town on christmas day. winless streak came end when george needham goal gave team 1–0 win on bristol rovers on 29 january, there followed sequence of 5 games in team manage goalless draw , 4 defeats. team staged late rally in april, winning 3 of last 6 matches, not enough avoid finishing season bottom of table.
