in july 2004, bankrupt varese football club reformed under new board, , called a.s. varese 1910. club forced start afresh in eccellenza league. sogliano family took control of team, riccardo sogliano assuming overall control. former player of varese , a.c. milan, has experience controlling clubs in serie a: parma f.c. , genoa c.f.c..


in first season new board suffered delay , inexperience, , promotion serie d missed narrowly due points dropped on in season club s eventual title-rivals. club president peo maroso , general manager luca sogliano, son of riccardo , former player, decided instate new first-team coach within. devis mangia, @ 32 years of age, youngest head coach of division and, probably, entire league.

in season 2008/2009, won lega pro seconda divisione, , promoted lega pro prima divisione, third level of italian football system. varese finished second in girone (group) of league pro prima divisione , qualified promotion play-offs @ next season. varese defeated benevento in semi-final , cremonese in final , returned serie b after 25 years of absence making second consecutive promotion.


at end of season 2011/12, a.s. varese achieved fifth place in serie b, qualifying play-offs promotion serie a. drawn against hellas verona won 3–1 on aggregate qualify two-legged final against sampdoria. although narrow 3–2 defeat in initial leg in genoa held promise useful result varese, rivals scored goal in home leg, giving sampdoria 4–2 aggregate victory , denying varese promotion.
