after landfall hurricane continued moving northwestward @ 15 mph (24 km/h). mid-level ridge on southeastern united states had dominated gustav s steering last few days drifted northward, pulling hurricane it. moving further inland hurricane gustav continued weaken while delivering torrential rains central gulf coast of united states. eye had cleared during landfall filled in afternoon , replaced central dense overcast. night, 12 hours after landfall, gustav weakened tropical storm winds of 60 mph (97 km/h).

slipping below tropical storm strength following morning, gustav s firm steering currents began erode , forward motion slowed. storm crept through northwest louisiana on september 2, heavy rainfall began accumulate in region. storm continued northwestward though intersection of arkansas, louisiana, texas, , oklahoma , arkansas proper, forward motion slowed considerably , dumped isolated rainfall accumulations in excess of 9 inches (228.60 mm). through morning of september 3, tropical depression gustav briefly drifted north-northeastward under weak steering currents, stalled on southwestern arkansas afternoon , spread heavy rain mid-mississippi valley. evening, steering currents returned , gustav picked speed northeast @ 7 mph (11 km/h). moving more rapidly gustav left mississippi valley , headed towards ohio valley.
the next morning, passed through missouri, gustav began gain extratropical characteristics merged frontal boundary. extratropical transition completed on afternoon of september 4 gustav s remnant low moving 28 mph (45 km/h) on st. louis, missouri. although no longer tropical system, remnants of gustav continued bring wind , rain northern united states. evening, still traveling northeastward, remnants dropped 2–4 in (51–102 mm) of rain on illinois , widespread remnant low produced trace rainfall stretching iowa indiana. nightfall on september 4 remnants had reached southwest michigan, dumped rain until next morning, accumulations high 5 in (130 mm). storm s circulation remained intact through wisconsin dropped 1 in (25 mm) of rainfall. of gustav s more northerly remnants drifted minnesota dropped small amounts of rain. on september 5, storm s extratropical remnants absorbed larger extratropical low moving through great lakes.
