a vintage douglas dakota , douglas dc-3 first aircraft in biman s fleet. domestic operations commenced acquisition of 4 fokker f27 aircraft flying passengers chittagong , sylhet base in dhaka. shortly afterwards, boeing 707, chartered british caledonian, joined airline s fleet, allowing biman begin international flights. in 1983, biman purchased 3 mcdonnell douglas dc-10-30 aircraft singapore airlines provide services on long haul routes. british aerospace atp entered fleet in late 1990, coming replace fokker f27s.

mcdonnell douglas dc-10s , airbus a310-300s made of biman s international fleet, before delivery of modern boeing 777-300ers started in 2011. fokker f28s made remainder of fleet domestic , regional sectors, before retired in 2012. biman s fleet contains second-to-last douglas dc–10 come off production line (l/n 445), , 3 other airbus a310–300s produced following biman s purchase of 2 new airbus a310s in 1996. 2 fokker f28–4000s acquired pbair in 2004 @ cost of $2.91 million. both of these aircraft built in 1977, making biman s latest acquisitions oldest aircraft in fleet. ageing fleet made difficult biman maintain flight schedule, aircraft suffered mechanical problems, leading flight delays , cancellations. number of aircraft remained grounded owing lack of spare parts no longer manufactured , used parts difficult source. deal signed in january 2012 (2012-01) three-year contract german company maintenance of powerplants, dc–10s. airline operates own ancillary , maintenance facilities @ shahjalal international airport, carries out maintenance work , c-checks on dc–10–30s , a310–300s.


modernisation
2000s

in 2000, biman put out request proposal acquisition of 4 wide-bodied aircraft replace dc–10s, both fleet renewal plans , airline s expected privatisation shelved government. further attempt made in 2005 acquire new aircraft , plans submitted purchase of ten new wide-bodied airbus , boeing aircraft @ total cost of $1 billion. boeing arranged finance purchase provided guarantee given bangladesh government. after bureaucratic delays , perceived lack of commitment government, boeing lost interest , plans cancelled. similar attempt purchase medium-haul aircraft domestic service postponed. in march 2007 (2007-03), biman put out tender dry lease of 2 airbus a310-300 , 2 airbus a300-600 aircraft 2 years. sole response tender came star aviation of united arab emirates (uae).

after biman became public limited company, renewed attempts made procure new-generation aircraft replace ageing fleet. in november 2007, boeing made offer supply biman 4 boeing 777-200s (with options 2 more) delivered 2013 , 4 boeing 787-8 dreamliners (with options 2 more) delivered 2017 , provide similar aircraft on lease interim period beginning in 2009. average price of these aircraft quoted us$165 million. airbus made offer supply 4 airbus a320 or airbus a330 series aircraft @ lower price of boeing. manage fleet in short run, biman again floated tender in january 2008 purchase/dry lease options purchase 2 used airbus a310-300 aircraft.


on 10 march 2008, biman management unveiled plan procure 8 next-generation wide-bodied aircraft boeing commercial airplanes total cost of us$1.26 billion, including 4 419-seater boeing 777-300er (average price of us$182.9 million per unit), , 4 boeing 787-8 dreamliners seat 294 (us$133.31 million per unit), delivered in 2017. deal acquisition of these 8 aircraft signed boeing in april 2008, , included memorandum of understanding purchase of 2 boeing 737-800s delivered in 2015, biman making initial instalment of us$1.54 million. of remaining cost, us-based exim bank finance 85%, while syndication of local banks finance balance. in june same year, biman placed firm order 2 boeing 737-800s, , took options 2 more aircraft of type. total order these ten aircraft valued @ around us$2.5 billion.


2010s

in 2010, biman leased 2 boeing 777-200ers euroatlantic airways. these aircraft used on routes european destinations cover interim period before delivery of first 2 new boeing 777-300ers in 2011. secure delivery of these 2 brand new 777-300ers airline used initial us$277 million loan granted jpmorgan chase. wearing new livery, carrier took delivery of first boeing 777-300er in late october 2011. 300th 777-300er delivered boeing. 301st ever delivered boeing 777-300er went biman; airline took possession of in late november 2011 (2011-11). third boeing 777-300er, named aakash pradeep, handed on carrier in february 2014 (2014-02); fourth one, named raanga pravat, joined fleet in march 2014 (2014-03), following government approving us$356 million loan, of us$290 million provided ex-im bank , rest standard chartered bank.


biman retired entire mcdonnell douglas dc-10 fleet on 20 february 2014, operating special dhaka-birmingham farewell flight last dc-10, stopover @ kuwait; carrier operated 9 separate aviation enthusiasts scenic flights @ birmingham, 22–24 february, 3 flights day. aircraft offered sale scrap in dhaka. airbus a310-300s withdrawn service in october 2016.


the carrier leased 2 boeing 777-200er aircraft egyptair in march 2014. airline plans expand fleet 16 aircraft, allow route expansion. newly leased dash 8-q400 aircraft, carrier resuming full swing domestic flights cox s bazar, jessore, saidpur, rajshahi , barisal in april 2015. 2 aircraft, dry leased smart aviation company period of 5 years, operated on regional flights kolkata , yangon. supposed resume in november 2013, biman failed unable find lessor of aircraft.


in february 2017, announced airline acquire 3 of own dash 8-q400 used replace current aircraft leased smart aviation company continue operating domestic , regional flights.


livery

a rebranding of biman in 2010, scrapped after 2 months


in modern bengali, word বিমান biman refers aeroplane , originating sanskrit word vimāna, name given flying machine mentioned in ancient vedic literature. logo, painted on tail, stylised white stork (বলাকা bôlaka) inside red circle. logo designed painter quamrul hassan. initial livery dark blue line extending across aircraft along windows , covering tail section. replaced in 1980s dark green , red lines, matching colours of bangladesh flag, , has remained on 2 decades.


in 2010, biman went through rebranding exercise , unveiled new logo , livery, designed teague, applied leased boeing 777 , 737 aircraft. however, following change of government, biman forced revert original branding new brand image not endorsed incoming government. carrier has adopted new, more modern revised version of livery, applied new boeing 777-300ers delivered in late 2011.


the bôlaka has given name biman headquarters, balaka bhaban (বলাকা ভবন bôlaka bhôban, stork building), , landmark sculpture in dhaka depicting storks in front of biman s former headquarters, biman bhaban in motijheel commercial area in dhaka.
