the castle built in 12th century barons of böttstein. family first appears in historical records in 1087, though died out in 13th century. family subject earl of frickgau, included homberg-tierstein family , after 1231, habsburgs. after extinction of böttstein line, castle became property of barons of tiefenstein in 13th century. in 1361 lords of wessenberg granted castle , surrounding villages fief duke rudolf of austria. after old swiss confederacy conquered aargau in 1415, local rulers , jurisdiction remained same, overlords changed. villages , castle passed through number of owners until 1563 when sold lords of hallwil. after passing through several other owners on 5 june 1606 von roll brothers, johann peter, johann walter , karl emanuel, bought böttstein 1,800 florins. joined in 1615 fourth brother, johann ludwig.


in same year, von roll brothers demolished parts of old castle , began building new castle , chapel. in 1654 von roll estates divided , johann peter inherited castle. passed down son karl ernst, had daughter, named anna maria magdalena von roll. in 1674 married johann martin schmid von bellikon, bringing castle von bellikon family. owned surrounding villages until 1798 french invasion , creation of helvetic republic abolished of power of nobility. böttstein became part of helvetic canton of baden until collapse of republic , 1803 act of mediation in modern canton of aargau created. despite losing power on village, family retained castle until 1893. following year castle became monastery of spiritual organization called internationales töchterinstitut (international daughter s institute). institute disbanded , castle passed through number of owners until 1965.


in year acquired nordostschweizerische kraftwerke ag (today axpo holding), association of cantonal power companies in north-east switzerland. castle used provide office space technical department during construction of beznau nuclear power plant. renovated in 1971-1974 , converted country restaurant , hotel.
