qandala sits on wadi estuary, forms natural protective harbor vessels on gulf of aden. lies 75 kilometres (47 mi) east of bosaso, 549 kilometres (341 mi) south of aden, , 475 kilometres (295 mi) west of socotra.


the city located in autonomous puntland region of somalia. capital of qandala district.


in antiquity, qandala active trading center merchants interior of horn of africa, transported goods such incense, gum , aromatic woods , port. nickname gacanka hodonka ( gulf of prosperity ) relic era.


additionally, qandala coextensive ancient town of botiala. latter settlement features old fortress complex, overlooks , controls mouth of wadi leading inland.


2016 isil capture

on 26 october 2016, militant group linked isil captured qandala 50 armed fighters after brief firefight local security forces, becoming first town seized islamic state affiliated militants in somalia. bbc news reported isil militants had withdrawn town unclear reasons. however, report denied other media outlets , claimed false. on 7 december 2016, somali official says puntland security forces have recaptured port isil-linked fighters, killing 30 militants. 4 soldiers killed during operation.
