between 1964 , 1980 participated in 5 olympic games, winning 7 medals, 3 of them gold. broke 6 world records , athlete (male or female) have held world record in 100 m, 200 m , 400 m events. won 10 medals in european championships. between 1965 , 1979 gathered 26 national titles , set 38 records in 100–400 m sprint , long jump.


at first olympics in tokyo in 1964, took silver medal in long jump , 200 metres, , ran second leg of gold medal winning 4 x 100 meter relay team.


she double sprint winner @ world student games in budapest in 1965.


in 1966, @ european athletics championships won gold in long jump, 200 meters , 4 x 100 meter relay; , took silver in 100 meter sprint.


at second olympics in mexico, won bronze in 100 meters, failed qualify long jump final. recovered disappointment, win gold medal in 200 meters in new world record time. in sprint relay polish team dropped baton on final exchange in semi-final , finished last.


after giving birth son, in 1971 - managed bronze medal in long jump @ european championships in helsinki. compete in 3 events @ munich olympics in 1972, 2 sprints , long jump. come away bronze medal in 200 meters.


in 1974 season, became first woman break 50-second barrier 400 metres, , set new world record of 22.21 s 200 meters. @ european championships in rome won sprint double of 100 meters , 200 meters, beating favoured gdr sprinter renate stecher; , ran anchor leg on 4 x 100 meter relay team took bronze. ranked number 1 in world in 100, 200 , 400 m events in 1974.


she win final olympic medal in montreal in 1976, winning gold in 400 metres in world record time of 49.28. @ inaugural world cup of track , field in 1977, win both 200 metres , 400 metres; beating both favoured east german runners barbel wockel , marita koch respectively. ranked number 1 in world 200 m , 400 m in 1976 , 1977.


in final appearance @ european championships @ 32 year of age, managed win bronze in 400 meters , 4 x 400 meter relay.


she ranked number 1 in world 7 times in 200 metres; 4 times in 400 metres, , 2 times in 100 metres; 3 times in long jump. over-all, ranked 15 years in top ten @ 200 metres, 4 times number 2, twice @ number 3, leaves 2 years outside top 3; (from 1964 1977 ranked in top 3 – 200 metre runners in world) remarkable achievement. ranked 12 times in 100 metres, 8 times in long jump , 6 times in 400 metres (which took in 1974).


in 1998, szewińska became d member of international olympic committee. of 2004, head of polish federation of athletics.


on 3 august 2005, elected third woman iaaf (international association of athletics federations) council during first session of 45th iaaf congress in helsinki.


she member of international jewish sports hall of fame, , iaaf hall of fame.
