origins

bubble puppy formed in 1966 in san antonio, texas, rod prince , roy cox had performed in rock group called bad seeds . looking form top gun rock band based on concept of dual lead guitars, prince , cox recruited todd potter, austin, texas gymnast, saxophonist, , guitarist. addition of danny segovia , clayton pulley, original line of bubble puppy complete. name bubble puppy taken centrifugal bumble-puppy , fictitious children s game in aldous huxley s brave new world. bubble puppy s live debut opening act in san antonio in 1967.

after few line-up changes (drummer clayton pulley being replaced craig root, , departure of danny segovia), final roster bubble puppy settled @ rod prince , todd potter on lead guitars, roy cox on bass guitar, , david fuzzy fore on drums. in spring of 1967, bubble puppy moved austin, texas , signed recording contract houston-based international artists, home 13th floor elevators , red krayola.

the use of dual lead guitars pioneered bubble puppy s prince , potter, exhibited in live performances 1967. 2 years later, english counterparts, wishbone ash , usa s allman brothers band, begin using same technique great success.

bubble puppy scored top 20 hit in 1969 single, hot smoke & sasafrass . name misheard line lifted episode of beverly hillbillies. single peaked @ number 14 on billboard hot 100 in u.s. , number 15 on rpm chart in canada. in addition, song @ top of many radio station playlists on spring of 1969, reaching #1 on both wls in chicago , wabc in new york city. song covered internationally mgmt, popular american psychedelic rock band, , mooche in uk. cleveland ohio classic rock trio pagan club orchestra opened live shows cover version of hot smoke , sasafrass ( our favorite song ). audiences d heard original bubble puppy hit typically ecstatic; 1 concert-goer raved, ve been waiting 20 years hear song!

in 1969, bubble puppy released first full-length album, gathering of promises. however, despite bubble puppy s success hot smoke & sasafrass single, parted ways label in 1970.

demian

signing nick st. nicholas of steppenwolf manager, bubble puppy moved los angeles in 1970. name changed demian (after hermann hesse s 1919 novel @ suggestion of manager s wife). avoid contractual difficulties previous record company because former name appeared link them bubblegum music.

the group signed abc-dunhill records , released 1 self-titled album in 1971, failure perform on charts led financial difficulties label , group s breakup in 1972.

later years

the members of bubble puppy continued active in music industry after band s demise. potter , prince played sirius during 1970s, , fore drummed texas punk rock band, d-day, co-writing cult hit, young date .

when demian disbanded in 1972, potter stayed in california, working session player, before joining , touring rusty wier s fabulous filler brothers.

prince bounced around in different bands including deadhorse puppy, manbeast, , prince trio. addition of drummer mark evans , bassist george rarey in 1979, potter , prince reunited in sirius.

in 1984, original bubble puppy lineup reunited performances , recordings, , released second lp, wheels go round in 1987.

roy cox founded blues knights , released 2 cds: before go in 1999, , road freedom in 2001. formed nyc outlaws in september 2007 in new york city, along tony saracene on guitar, dan curley on guitar, cody willard on guitar, evan hammer on bass, , billy brooks on drums. cox died on 2 april 2013.

reunion , 2011–2017 appearances

on march 19, 2011, 3 of original members of bubble puppy reunited first time in 25 years performance @ austin music awards. band added mark miller (guitar) , jimmy umstattd (bass) line-up. david fore met 2 while playing in austin cover band kopy kats. fore , mark played in mid-1970s in austin cover band, zeus. in april 2013, gregg stegall joined line-up taking todd potter s place in band. stegall has long-standing musical affiliation mark , umstattd dating 1970s.

bubble puppy s recent live performances included appearances @ texas legacy music awards in san antonio, texas (4 september 2011); saxon pub in austin, texas (30 december 2011); , antone s nightclub in austin (13 july 2012), , numerous appearances @ threadgill s world hq in austin. 2012–2017 finds band booked in austin, san antonio, houston, dallas, , corpus christi on rotating basis. line-up of rod prince, david fore, mark miller, jimmy umstattd, , gregg stegall remains intact. summer & fall of 2017 has band playing in san antonio in june, austin & houston in july, 2 more shows in austin in august, , in san antonio in sept. psych del rio music festival.
