the winterville people made pottery building strips of clay, , smoothing them out, other pottery in eastern american area potters wheel unknown. pottery tempered ground mussel shell, grit, grog, , angular bits of clay. surface treatment ranged carelessly polished finely polished. forms pottery range shallow plate bowls beakers , jars, pieces having animal effigies handles. surface decorations range plain incised s.e.c.c. designs.


most pottery found @ winterville site of kinds known addis plain var. addis, addis plain var. greenville , addis plain var. holly bluff. of mississippian culture pottery found @ winterville site believed have been imported other mississippian societies (possibly cahokia or cahokian-influenced peoples). examples of these pieces of pottery nodena red , white var. dumond , walls engraved var. walls. these examples have distinctive red , white slips, thinner walls, , more finely finished surfaces locally produced wares , may have been valued exotic qualities , fine workmanship.
