on january 1, 1947 - town of shibata became city. after gained city status, shibata , niigata merged form city known shibata. surrounding areas , district continued lose more areas.
on november 1, 1970 - town of toyosaka (part of niigata of march 21, 2005) gained city status.
on july 7, 2003 - town of toyoura merged city of shibata.
on april 1, 2004 - towns of suibara , yasuda, , villages of kyogase , sasakami merged create city of agano.
on may 1, 2005 - town of shiunji , village of kajikawa merged city of shibata.
on september 1, 2005 - town of nakajō , village of kurokawa merged form city of tainai; left seirō town in kitakanbara district.

11th century parish church of St Leonard Hythe, Kent
