the first boat taken off river r.r. thompson. on june 3, 1882, captain john mcnulty took r.r. thompson down through cascade rapids operate on more lucrative lower columbia , lower willamette rivers.


that day captain mcnulty william johnson, first officer, william doran, engineer, , george fuller, assistant, took r.r. thompson out of dalles @ 6:30 a.m., passed klickitat landing, ten miles below, in twenty-four minutes, white salmon, twenty-three miles, in fifty-one minutes, hood river, twenty-five miles, in fifty-eight minutes, , reached cascades, forty-six miles, in 2 hours , 1 minute.


r.r.thompson remained @ top of cascades short time , swung stream , entered cascades under full stroke, making run bonneville in 6 minutes , forty seconds, passing through heart of rapids @ rate of mile minute.


the trip portland accomplished in 2 hours , fifty minutes, , steamed past ash street dock @ 12:17 p.m. actual running time 5 hours.


the passage of thompson through six-mile long cascades rapids in 6 minutes 40 seconds record approached never beaten. famous later occasion hassalo in run on may 26, 1888. on occasion, r.r. thompson, captain mcnulty still in command, lurline transported 1,500 people equal number of others @ cascades witness hassalo s run.
