construction
the shanghai transrapid project took ¥10 billion (us$1.33bn) , 2 , half years complete. line 30.5 km (18.95 mi) track , has further separate track leading maintenance facility.
extensions
in january 2006, shanghai–hangzhou maglev line extension project proposed shanghai urban planning administrative bureau. extension continue existing line towards shanghai hongqiao international airport, running via shanghai south railway station , expo 2010 site, possible continuation towards hangzhou. extension allow transferring between 2 airports—located 55 km (34 mi) apart—in approximately 15 minutes.
the plan extension hangzhou first approved central government in february 2006, planned date of completion in 2010. work suspended in 2008, owing public protests on radiation fears despite environmental assessment shanghai academy of environmental sciences saying line safe , not affect air , water quality, , noise pollution controlled. according china daily, reported on people s daily online 27 february 2009, shanghai municipal government considering building maglev line underground allay public s fear of electromagnetic pollution , final decision on maglev line had approved national development , reform commission.
another approval granted in march 2010, construction begin in late 2010. new link 199.5 km (124 mi) long, 24 km (15 mi) longer original plan. top speed expected 450 km/h (280 mph) limited 200 km/h (124 mph) in built-up areas.
however, in october 2010 non-maglev shanghai–hangzhou high-speed railway opened, bringing travelling time between 2 cities down 45 minutes. plans maglev link have been suspended again.
incidents
on 11 august 2006, maglev train compartment caught fire @ 14:40, after having left pudong international airport in direction of pudong longyang road station. there no injuries aboard. preliminary reports indicated electrical problem may have been cause.
on 14 february 2016, shanghai maglev line had equipment failure affected operation more 1 hour. due use of single-line operation during time, train interval extended.
technology transfer
as part of contract, transrapid agreed limited technology transfer china. first chinese-built four-car vehicle containing german core components , technology went service in january 2011.
