2007-2009: beginnings , balloon called moaning

childhood friends , couple ritzy bryan , bassist rhydian dafydd played part of manchester band tricky nixon, later reformed sidecar kisses. after sidecar kisses split in 2007, regrouped, returning welsh home town of mold, , formed joy formidable justin stahley on drums. in july 2008, released first official single, austere . followed christmas single, beerdrunk soul sadder hundred dead christmas trees , issued 2008 digital download, , cradle double 7 in 2009. band s debut ep, balloon called moaning released exclusively in japan on 17 december 2008, followed uk release in march 2009.


in 2009, stahley replaced matthew james thomas. april, teamed new label started passion pit s ayad al adhamy, black bell records, release balloon called moaning in u.s, earning favourable reviews nme, guardian, times, spin , pitchfork.


2010-2011: big roar

in 2010, band signed canvasback records, subsidiary of atlantic, , began work on debut album, big roar recorded in london. dafydd said (it) covers lot of emotional range. s captured battle between eternal optimist , manic depressive . album produced joy formidable engineer neak menter. band traveled los angeles mix producer rich costey, had worked bands such mew, muse, foo fighters , glasvegas.


the big roar released on 24 january 2011 , included singles austere , cradle , whirring 2 further singles, don t want see , heavy abacus ( whirring later sampled lonely island on yolo ). in november 2011, song endtapes featured on twilight saga: breaking dawn film soundtrack.


2012-2014: wolf s law , aruthrol

on 23 august 2012, song wolf s law , released free download then-upcoming second studio album of same title. 2 official singles, ladder ours , cholla , released in late 2012, former peaking @ no. 24 on alternative songs chart. band s second studio album, wolf s law, officially released on 21 january 2013 in uk, , following day in u.s.


most of writing wolf s law done on road during 12-month tour in support of previous record, big roar. commenting on writing process album, bryan explained songs album approached vocals , 1 accompaniment (either guitar or piano) before being built upon, stating, s lyrics, voice , melody . vocals , guitars recorded in january 2012 in maine, while drums , additional orchestral , choir pieces record scored , recorded band in february 2012 in london. mixing duties record handled andy wallace while records production completed band. album title referred wolff s law, scientific theory julius wolff posits bones may become stronger in response stress form of adaptation. according bryan, related 1 of major themes of album, relationships on mend , feeling reinvigorated ; continued album felt band reconnecting emotionally , spiritually.


for record store day on 20 april 2013, joy formidable released limited-edition 12 single of minute s silence , outtake wolf s law, backed live cover of bruce springsteen s badlands . silent treatment later released album s third , final single in july 2013. in july 2014, band began monthly vinyl singles, titled aruthrol, consisting of songs sung in native welsh language released double a-side contribution artist. 3 singles, yn rhydiau r afon , tynnu sylw , y garreg ateb , released exclusively on 7 vinyl in collaboration colorama, white noise sound , bloom & heavy petting zoo.


2015-present: hitch

on 27 january 2016, band announced on facebook page third studio album, hitch, due release on 25 march 2016. band uploaded new song titled last thing on mind , accompanied self-produced montage music video consisting of clips of scantily clad or nude men, bryan explained in response over-sexualisation of women in modern media, stating don t condone objectification in general, point here is, when media representation imbalanced, if re seeing women sexualised or objectified, male perspective or otherwise, s limited, s damaging , frankly; s boring .
