the shock 1 of first wnba expansion teams , began play in 1998. shock brought in blend of rookies , veterans. team qualified postseason once in first 5 years of existence. shock went through 2 coaches (hall of famer nancy lieberman , greg williams) before hiring former detroit pistons legend bill laimbeer. there rumors shock fold after team s awful 2002 season. laimbeer convinced owners keep team year, turn things around.

after massive changes roster, laimbeer predicted before 2003 season shock league champions, , prediction unbelievably come true. shock finished 25–9 record , winning number 1 seed 7 games. in playoffs, shock defeated cleveland rockers , connecticut sun reach wnba finals. despite achievements, shock viewed huge underdogs two-time defending champion los angeles sparks. shock emerged victorious in series, winning thrilling game 3 (in 2003, finals best-of-three series), drew largest crowd in wnba history (22,076). detroit became first team in league history go last place 1 season wnba champions next season.


after coming short in 2004 , 2005, 2006 shock finished 23–11 record , finished number 2 in eastern conference. shock defeated indiana fever , connecticut sun advance finals again, faced defending champion sacramento monarchs. shock won series 3–2, , claimed second wnba title.


in 2007, shock again advanced finals defeated phoenix mercury in 5 games. 2008 shock posted 22–12 regular season record, best record in east yet again. in finals, shock faced san antonio silver stars, had not lost eastern conference team season. surprisingly, detroit swept san antonio, capturing third championship in franchise history.

the shock named favorites 2009, had rough road getting there. bill laimbeer resigned head coach in season, , found in bottom of standings. however, interim coach rick mahorn , shock bounced in second half of 2009 , placed in playoffs seventh straight year @ 18–16. shock lost in second round indiana fever, failing reach finals first time since 2005.
