stanek attended blue valley high school in stilwell, kansas. senior, stanek pitched 5–1 win–loss record, 0.72 earned run average (era), , 71 strikeouts. out of high school, baseball america ranked stanek 42nd best available player in 2010 major league baseball draft. seattle mariners selected stanek in third round, 99th overall selection, did not sign.


stanek enrolled @ university of arkansas play college baseball arkansas razorbacks baseball team. sophomore in 2012, stanek pitched 8–4 win-loss record 2.82 era , 83 strikeouts in  92 ⁄3 innings pitched. named all-tournament team in 2012 houston college classic. summer, played united states collegiate national baseball team.


prior 2013 season, stanek named pre-season all-american baseball america, perfect game, , collegiate baseball, , southeastern conference (sec) pre-season pitcher of year. on march 25, 2013, stanek named sec pitcher of week. finished junior year 10–2 record, 1.39 era, 79 strikeouts, , 41 walks in  97 ⁄3 innings. in 3 years @ arkansas, compiled 22–8 record , 2.55 era, batting average against of .216.
