field hockey has second biggest player base in country after football, equally split among genders , strong youth foundation in many schools. currently, zimbabwe has 3 pitches, 2 in bulawayo - 1 water base , 1 sand filled - , sand filled @ arundel school in capital city of harare. bulawayo has approximately 1,000 hockey players , harare 8,000. while country had tradition in sport, women s team being gold medallist of inaugural olympic tournament in moscow 1980, struggled in recent times largely due inability participate in international competitions organized african hockey federation (afhf) , international hockey federation (fih), until khumalo hockey stadium refurbished , played host 2011 african olympic qualifier.
