michel sanchez came idea of mixing native baka pygmy spoken word modern music after hearing on-site recordings of these tribes conversing. along eric mouquet created project deep forest. first self-titled album (nominated grammy) released in 1992, sweet lullaby being smash single put deep forest on musical map (uk top 10 hit). song sweet lullaby adapted traditional song solomon islands. album deep forest dance-driven , samples heavily digitised , edited. re-released limited edition in 1994 under name world mix.


for second album boheme, eric , michel left behind sounds of forest , ventured eastern europe bringing tender, lonesome hungarian , roma chants upbeat, yet sad, music. due shift, dan lacksman (from telex, producer , sound-engineer of first album) decided go separate way , continued working on other projects pangea. chants no longer brief, instead extended phrases had been sampled hungarian, , russian. hungarian singer márta sebestyén , kate petrova performed on album. duo performed , produced remixes youssou n dour single undecided in 1994, guest vocals neneh cherry (who featured on n dour s break-through single 7 seconds ). same year deep forest made remixes jon anderson s deseo , apollo 440 s liquid cool , cesária Évora s fatigue endless . in 1996 deep forest collaborated peter gabriel on song while earth sleeps written film strange days.


the follow-up third album, comparsa, contained spanish chants , sounds. music upbeat , celebratory. last song album, media luna, released single, features duet of syrian , spanish singers abed azrei , ana torroja.the duo collaborated joe zawinul on song deep weather during recording of album. jorge reyes (late mexican musician), collaborated in album percussion, vocals , flute.


a recording of live concert in japan released on cd called made in japan. although songs featured in show previous 3 albums, have new often-longer arrangements , chants performed , reinterpreted live performers.


in 1999 deep forest worked cheb mami , catherine lara on song l enfant fleur had been composed sol en si (a french charity helps hiv families).


in 2000, deep forest released fourth album, pacifique. album composed support movie le prince du pacifique mixes pacific , island beats electronic music.


music detected title of fifth much-anticipated official deep forest album saw duo turn attention far east , orient inspiration. signalled change in musical style deep forest, dance more rock-influence. collaborated indonesian pop musician anggun on bilingual song deep blue sea served lead single.


in 2003 deep forest released compilation album essence of forest, remastered tracks. in 2004 deep forest collaborated josh groban, composed , produced 2 songs on album closer. in 2006 deep forest collaborated josh groban on album awake. in 2008 deep forest released album deep brasil, collaboration brazilian artist flavio dell isola. during 2009-2010 deep forest went new band formula on stage , deep forest performed in different countries , continents (china, africa, usa, japan, france...). in 2014 deep forest released album deep africa


in 2013 sony music india released deep india, deep forest , rahul sharma collaboration.


in 2017, band collaborated ukrainian folk project onuka on song vsesvit . track part of onuka s second studio album mozaїka

11th century parish church of St Leonard Hythe, Kent
