Structure Facial muscles

1 structure

1.1 innervation
1.2 development
1.3 list of muscles

structure

the facial muscles subcutaneous (just under skin) muscles control facial expression. originate surface of skull bone (rarely fascia), , insert on skin of face. when contract, skin moves. these muscles cause wrinkles @ right angles muscles’ action line. use of these muscles noted during extraoral examination, assuring function of nerve these muscles.

innervation

the facial muscles innervated facial nerve (cranial nerve vii), each nerve serving 1 side of face. in contrast, nearby masticatory muscles innervated mandibular nerve, branch of trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve v).

development

the facial muscles derived second branchial/pharyngeal arch.

list of muscles

the facial muscles include:

occipitofrontalis muscle
temporoparietalis muscle
procerus muscle
nasalis muscle
depressor septi nasi muscle
orbicularis oculi muscle
corrugator supercilii muscle
depressor supercilii muscle
auricular muscles (anterior, superior , posterior)
orbicularis oris muscle
depressor anguli oris muscle
risorius
zygomaticus major muscle
zygomaticus minor muscle
levator labii superioris
levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle
depressor labii inferioris muscle
levator anguli oris
buccinator muscle
mentalis

the platysma innervated facial nerve. although in neck , can grouped neck muscles location, can considered muscle of facial expression due common innervation.

the stylohyoid muscle, stapedius , posterior belly of digastric muscle innervated facial nerve, not considered muscles of facial expression.
