catherine raisin spent entire academic career @ bedford college, in 1886, became demonstrator of botany. first full-time head of geology department 1890 1920, , helped form separate geography department while still teaching large amount of geology classes. head of geology department, head of botany department 1891 1908 , head of geography department 1916 1920. raisin accepted offer of post of vice principal of college in 1898, resigned in 1901 due high work load. following year raisin elected fellow of university college. member of geologists association 67 years, 1 of longest serving members.
the main focus of raisin s research in microscopic petrology , mineralogy, topics in published 24 papers between 1887 , 1905, counting community oriented works bonney. larger part of these papers distributed in 3 journals: quarterly journal of geological society; geological magazine; , proceedings of geologists association. in particular studied chert, serpentines, , spilites. in 1887, first paper read geological society of london t.g. bonney, since women not allowed present papers then. seen leading expert on metamorphic facies, set of mineral clusters formed under similar temperatures , pressures. worked on microcrystalline formation of chert in jurassic-era rocks , published findings in well-known paper proceedings of geologists association in 1903.
raisin became fellow of linnean society of london in 1906 , in 1919, after society changed rules allow women, became fellow of geological society of london @ age 64.
