the character first appeared anthony rogers, central character of nowlan s armageddon 2419 a.d. born in 1898, rogers veteran of great war (world war i) , 1927 working american radioactive gas corporation investigating reports of unusual phenomena reported in abandoned coal mines near wyoming valley in pennsylvania. on december 15, there cave-in while in 1 of lower levels of mine. exposed radioactive gas, rogers falls state of suspended animation, free ravages of catabolic processes, , without apparent effect on physical or mental faculties . rogers remains in suspended animation 492 years.


rogers awakens in 2419. thinking has been asleep several hours, wanders few days in unfamiliar forests (what had been pennsylvania 5 centuries before). notices clad in strange clothes, under attack. defends person, wilma deering, killing 1 of attackers , scaring off rest. on air patrol , deering attacked enemy gang, bad bloods, presumed have allied hans.


wilma takes rogers camp, meets bosses of gang. invited stay them or leave , visit other gangs. hope rogers experience , knowledge gained fighting in first world war may useful in struggle hans rule north america 15 great cities established across continent. ignored americans left fend in forests , mountains advanced technology prevented need slave labor.


in sequel, airlords of han, 6 months have passed , hunter hunted. rogers gang leader , forces, other american gangs, have surrounded cities , attacking constantly. airlords determined use fleet of airships break siege.


in 1933, nowlan , calkins co-wrote buck rogers in 25th century, novella retold origin of buck rogers , summarized of adventures. reprint of work included first edition of novel buck rogers: life in future (1995) martin caidin.


in 1960s, nowlan s 2 novellas combined editor donald a. wollheim 1 paperback novel, armageddon 2419 a.d. original 40-cent edition featured cover ed emshwiller.
