history
sahara (1952–2011)

the first casino built on site club bingo, opened in 1947. owner milton prell replaced casino new casino hotel in 1952 called sahara hotel. located outside city of las vegas, sixth resort open on strip. resort built del webb. porte-cochere entrance, topped onion-dome minaret, designed set resort s warm moroccan flavor , hospitality arriving guests.


in late 1954, hotel hired jazz musician louis prima late night lounge act, 1 of earliest ones on las vegas strip. along then-wife keely smith , sax player sam butera, created 1 of hottest late-night attractions on strip. in 1956, abbott , costello appeared last time on sahara stage before permanent breakup. hotel constructed first high-rise tower on strip in 1959, tunis tower, designed martin stern.

in 1961, hotel purchased del webb. in 1962, don beachcomber restaurant opened in hotel, becoming top attraction not hotel guests variety of celebrities well. 24-story alexandria tower added in 1963, made hotel tallest building in las vegas.


the resort site of annual jerry lewis labor day telethon many years, in 1970s, , brief time in 1990s.


performers @ resort on years have included frank sinatra, dean martin, sammy davis jr., peter lawford, judy garland, marlene dietrich, lena horne, jack benny, tony bennett, paul anka, george carlin, liza minnelli, barbra streisand, wayne newton, bill cosby, ann-margret, louis prima, joey bishop, shelley berman, buddy hackett, drifters, don rickles, bobby darin, coasters, sonny & cher , many others. in 1964, beatles stayed @ sahara , played 2 shows @ nearby las vegas convention center.


by 1978, 27-story tangiers tower added property.


del webb corp ran financial problems in late 1970s , 1980s. company sold sahara paul lowden s archon corporation $50 million in 1982.


ownership changed in 1995, when archon sold property bill bennett. expansion 27-story tangiers tower added in 1987, , new porte-cochere added near relocated pool 10 years later, in 1997.


in 1999, further renovations added roller coaster , restaurant. roller coaster, named speed - ride , shot riders hotel outside along las vegas strip, looped through grandiose sahara sign in front of hotel, went straight tower, stopped , took return trip backwards. bergman walls associates 1999 architects.

bennett died in december 2002. rumors of sahara s closure surfaced in media in february 2006. june, sahara site reportedly sale.

in march 2007, sam nazarian , stockbridge real estate group agreed purchase sahara bennett family estimated $300 $400 million.


closing sahara (2011)

the sahara shut down on may 16, 2011. sbe chief executive sam nazarian stated hotel not economically viable . nazarian said 1,600 hotel workers find new jobs. closure left riviera (closed in 2015), tropicana, flamingo, caesars palace, , circus circus remaining pre-1969 era.


on may 16, 2011, @ 12:00 pm pdt, last hotel guest checked out of sahara hotel , casino, , hotel officially closed @ 2:00 pm. marked end of 59-year run on strip. according sahara s website, previous reservations honored @ circus circus. ncl/national content liquidators began liquidation sale on june 16, 2011, of items inside property; sale continued until property empty. final day of sale september 4, 2011.


the speed - ride , located in front of casino, sold , removed. relocated across mandalay bay in new akita plaza.


sls conversion (2013–present)

on february 14, 2013, nazarian announced groundbreaking $415 million conversion of hotel sls las vegas. hotel opened on august 23, 2014. contains 1,600 rooms, casino, 4 nightclubs, clothing store fred segal , various restaurants. name sls chosen nazarian denote style, luxury , service.


the guest rooms , restaurants designed philippe starck in collaboration gensler. additionally, handful of suites designed musician , actor lenny kravitz.


on september 6, 2014, hilton worldwide added sls specialty curio brand. facility offers 80,000 sq ft of event space, 9 dining establishments, open air rooftop pool/nightclub, , ciel spa.


on october 6, 2015, sam nazarian sold interest in sls las vegas , made agreement franchise hotel stockbridge real estate group.


on november 9, 2015, starwood hotels & resorts announced add sls las vegas tribute portfolio, chain of independent four-star hotels allow take advantage of starwood s reservation platform , member benefits. announced 289-room lux tower, 1 of 3 towers onsite, undergo renovation , rebranding w las vegas in september 2016. w have own dedicated entrance, lobby, meeting space, pool , facilities , managed starwood while remainder of sls remain under existing management. conversion w officially completed on december 1, 2016.


in may 2017, meruelo group agreed purchase sls las vegas.
