on 30 may 1943, joined pioneer american hunter-killer group built around bogue. clemson made 8 patrols group during sank 8 german submarines, major contribution victory in battle of atlantic. clemson shared in credit sinking of u-172 on 13 december @ 26° 19 n., 29° 58 w. after overhaul @ new york in 1944, escorted convoy casablanca , between 25 january , 9 march. once more, clemson underwent conversion, time high speed transport @ charleston navy yard (reclassified apd-31, 7 march 1944).

clearing charleston on 1 may 1944, transport reached pearl harbor on 24 may , embarked underwater demolition team 6 (udt 6). sailed westward act mother ship udt 6 prepared beaches before invasions of saipan, guam, peleliu, leyte , of luzon. while entering lingayen gulf 5 january 1945, drove off japanese air attack. clemson escorted convoys ulithi, saipan, , okinawa before returning san pedro, california, 6 july. re-designated dd-186, 17 july, still undergoing reconversion when world war ii ended. decommissioned 12 october 1945 , sold 21 november 1946. ship s bell privately owned in clemson, south carolina.
