channel catfish possess keen senses of smell , taste. @ pits of nostrils (nares) sensitive odor sensing organs high concentration of olfactory receptors. in channel catfish, these organs sensitive enough detect several amino acids @ 1 part per 100 million in water. in addition, channel catfish has taste buds distributed on surface of entire body. these buds concentrated on fish s 4 pair of barbels (whiskers) surrounding mouth — 25 buds per square millimeter. combination of exceptional senses of taste , smell allows channel catfish find food in dark, stained, or muddy water relative ease. channel catfish possess weberian apparatus, amplifies sound waves otherwise not perceivable.
