launch of first block ii saturn (nasa)
the first scheduled launch attempt 27 january 1964, going until 93% of liquid oxygen (lox) had been loaded first stage. @ time, ground crews switched fast fill replenish system. however, lox in tanks began fall, i.e., not being replenished. cause found blind flange (a plate without opening) in line. not removed , launch had postponed 2 days.
the second launch attempt had no such problems , lifted off overcast skies @ january 29, 1964, 11:25 est. rocket sent 1,183 measurements ground during flight while @ same time tracked 6 telescopes. first 1000 meters rocket filmed 13 cameras looked pitch, yaw, , roll movements.
the separation of 2 rocket stages filmed 8 cameras separated rocket recovered 800 km (497 mi) downrange in atlantic ocean. whole stage separation system worked retrorockets firing on first stage decelerate , ullage rockets on s-iv firing settle fuel aft of stage.
after eight-minute burn, second stage entered 262 km (163 mi) 785 km (487 mi) orbit. @ 16,965 kg (37,401 lb) largest satellite ever go orbit @ time. however, achievement of earth orbit not objective of mission merely bonus. did show american public united states build launch vehicles large of soviet union.
