football manager 3, while planned when kevin toms still working prism leisure on world cup edition, created without involvement series creator. toms cited artistic differences breakdown in relationship between himself , prism. game instead developed brian rogers of bedrock software, had been involved in programming series since football manager 2.


release of game delayed. while playable demo of zx spectrum version included on cover tape of september 1991 issue of sinclair, expected release date couple of months later, game released @ end of 1992. also, though versions planned , advertised of platforms football manager 2 had been released on, st , amiga versions never released. screenshots in advertisements not of version released suggesting st or amiga version had been developed.


as 8-bit systems declining in popularity 1992 , there more complex competitors available pc (and other 16-bit systems game never released for) such championship manager , premier manager, game sold poorly.

the game redesigned , bears little resemblance previous installments. game centres around graphical screen of manager s office different parts of game accessed clicking on various items (e.g. computer screen results , fixtures, picture of team training etc.). game features full 92 team league system (including charity shield first time) , teams begin first season in correct divisions (the 91/92 season versions, 92/93 season including newly formed premier league in c64 version) player s team, in previous games, begin in bottom division. players, however, not resemble real footballers , have random names (always shown middle initials). game begins team of aging players low skill ratings.


there more detail individual player attributes 3 endurance , 5 skill values can altered through training. each player has face shown when picking team. player contracts have negotiated , out of contract players leave club. transfer market improved each team in league having named players first time histories can studied when deciding buy new player. matches shown side-on whole pitch on screen. meant represent whole game rather edited highlights. text commentary shown @ bottom of screen match played. unlike previous 2 games, there no chance change tactics or substitute @ half time. team talk , reporter elements removed in version.


critical reception

the game not received previous versions. philip lindey in sinclair user suggested difficult excited football manager 3 , overpriced, giving overall score of 73%. stuart campbell in sinclair thought game not quite standard of football manager 2, honest, vastly inferior presentation , graphics, , lots of hanging around while computer thinks , doesn t seem working , giving score of 70%. amstrad action awarded game 38%, again claiming did not live football manager 2.
