Armament Russian battleship Potemkin

the main armament consisted of 4 40-calibre 12-inch (305 mm) guns mounted in twin gun turrets fore , aft of superstructure. electrically operated turrets derived design of used petropavlovsk-class battleships. these guns had maximum elevation of +15° , rate of fire slow, 1 round every 4 minutes during gunnery trials. fired 745-pound (337.7 kg) shell @ muzzle velocity of 2,792 ft/s (851 m/s). @ elevation of +10° guns had range of 13,000 yards (12,000 m). potemkin carried 60 rounds each gun.


the sixteen 45-calibre, six-inch (152 mm) canet pattern 1891 quick-firing (qf) guns mounted in casemates. twelve of these placed on sides of hull , other 4 positioned @ corners of superstructure. fired shells weighed 91.4 lb (41.46 kg) muzzle velocity of 2,600 ft/s (792 m/s). had maximum range of 12,602 yards (11,523 m) when fired @ elevation of +20°. ship stowed 160 rounds per gun.


smaller guns carried close-range defence against torpedo boats. these included fourteen 50-calibre canet qf 75-millimetre (3.0 in) guns: 4 in hull embrasures , remaining 10 mounted on superstructure. ship carried 300 shells each gun. fired 11-pound (4.9 kg) shell @ muzzle velocity of 2,700 ft/s (820 m/s) maximum range of 7,005 yards (6,405 m). mounted 6 47-millimetre (1.9 in) hotchkiss guns. 4 of these mounted in fighting top , 2 on superstructure. fired 2.2-pound (1.00 kg) shell @ muzzle velocity of 1,400 ft/s (430 m/s).


potemkin had 5 underwater 15-inch (381 mm) torpedo tubes: 1 in bow , 2 on each broadside. carried 3 torpedoes each tube. model of torpedo in use changed on time; first torpedo ship have been equipped m1904. had warhead weight of 150 pounds (70 kg) , speed of 33 knots (61 km/h; 38 mph) maximum range of 870 yards (800 m).


in 1907 telescopic sights fitted 12-inch , 6-inch guns. in or following year 2.5-meter (8 ft 2 in) rangefinders installed. bow torpedo tube removed in 1910–11, fighting top. following year main gun turret machinery upgraded , guns modified improve rate of fire 1 round every 40 seconds.


two 57-millimetre (2.2 in) anti-aircraft (aa) guns mounted on ship s superstructure on 3–6 june 1915; supplemented 2 75 mm aa guns, 1 on top of each turret, during 1916. in february 1916 ship s 4 remaining torpedo tubes removed. @ point during world war 75 mm guns removed.
