the portuguese air force had purchased 12 merlins under €446 million contract, first of delivered on 22 december 2004. type has been used conduct transport, search , rescue, , maritime surveillance missions, progressively replacing aérospatiale puma tasked these missions. main role of portuguese aw101s perform search , rescue missions within portugal s maritime zone. operated 751 squadron , kept on constant alert @ 3 bases: montijo near lisbon, lajes field on azores, , porto santo island.
