tulsa had been mentioned possible future city wnba expansion, efforts did not come until middle of 2009. organizing committee tulsa businesspeople , politicians began effort attract expansion team. group given september 1 deadline. wnba president donna orender extended deadline sometime in october. investment group hired former university of arkansas head coach nolan richardson potential franchise general manager , head coach. richardson local favorite; before successful 18-year stint @ arkansas, had spent 5 years head coach @ university of tulsa, leading them nit title in first year. move viewed strange some, considering tulsa had not secured franchise before hiring coach. investors claimed show league serious wanting team. on october 15, 2009, group made official request join league.


on october 20, 2009, wnba president donna orender, lead investors bill cameron , david box, tulsa mayor kathy taylor, oklahoma governor brad henry, , head coach nolan richardson present press conference announcing detroit shock relocate tulsa. on january 23, 2010, franchise announced team remain shock. colors black, red, , gold.


tough times (2010–2014)

the shock team moved tulsa different investors thought purchasing. detroit s 4 best players did not make move tulsa. cheryl ford decided sit out due lingering injuries , left wnba play overseas. taj mcwilliams-franklin signed free agent contract new york. deanna nolan, ford, left wnba play in russia. katie smith, believed contracted shock (which turned out verbal agreement), signed washington. along absences, new head coach , general manager nolan richardson had own ideas wanted roster , middle of 2010 season, there no detroit players left on team.


richardson s first draft pick, amanda thompson, bust; played 7 games (no starts) , waived month season. key signing, fallen olympic track star marion jones, turned out less hoped well; hadn t played meaningful basketball game since days @ north carolina 13 years earlier.


a lack of continuity plagued team; @ times seemed richardson made roster moves on game-to-game basis. players found difficult adjust richardson s frenetic 40 minutes of hell style. shock finished awful 6–28 record, dead last in league. missed playoffs first time since 2002 in detroit. losing valuable players , getting off bad start meant shock qualified draft lottery, , awarded number 2 pick in 2011 draft.


the shock selected 19-year-old australian center liz cambage hopes build successful team around her. team signed veteran , 1 of original wnba players, sheryl swoopes. roster changes not enough, however, , after team started season dreadful 1-10 record, head coach richardson stepped down. assistant coach teresa edwards took place on interim basis. jones waived few days later. things did not improve shock, entered all-star break 1–14 record. later in season, shock set new mark futility when embarked on 20-game losing streak, longest losing streak in history of wnba.


in 2012, misery continued team began season 1–11, going on finish 9–25. team finish better records of 11-23 in 2013 , 12-22 in 2014.

the 2015 shock started off well, team starting 10–7, including 6–1 record @ bok center. however, in june, point guard skylar diggins suffered knee injury , missed rest of season. on july 20, 2015, majority owner bill cameron shocked not fans in tulsa, wnba announced move team dallas. following day, minority owner stuart price filed suit against cameron in failed attempt keep team in tulsa.


on july 23, 2015, wnba league owners unanimously approved tulsa shock s relocation dallas-fort worth. last regular season home game shock in tulsa september 13 against phoenix. while shock did make playoffs, still young , swept in 2 straight same phoenix squad. new home arena shock in dfw college park center @ ut arlington, home ut arlington mavericks.


on november 2, 2015 team name officially changed dallas wings. name stems famous mobil oil co. flying horse atop of historic downtown dallas building. similar mascot local nba team dallas mavericks.
