the men after whom allegan s downtown streets named – elisha ely, samuel hubbard, charles christopher trowbridge, pliny cutler, , edmund monroe – patented land in area in 1833. considered site prime location industry, due potential water power (since straddled kalamazoo river) , water bound transportation. 1835, dam , sawmill had been established.
in 1886, one-lane bridge built on kalamazoo river connect limited highway m-89 downtown area. bridge fell disrepair , going removed until group of activists raised money restore bridge in 1983. highlight of allegan, one-lane bridge used in city logo , considered important part of city.
in 1914, allegan entered automobile (race car) industry manufacturing site of howard e. blood , louis chevrolet s unique chain-drive cornelian automobile. venture short-lived, however, fewer 100 cornelians produced.[1][2][3]
easter/passover weekend 1967, scenes movie ciao! manhattan filmed @ old allegan county jail, allegan county jail museum. ironically, paul america, 1 of actors in underground film, jailed following year in upstate michigan, facing twenty years life on obscure marijuana charge. [4]
